Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4
During my first athletic camp as part of the off season practice we were given a diet chart. The nutritionist used to advice us depending on the body condition and the sport we are in we had this customized. We religiously followed the diet and the practice to be among the best athletes. It is essential that our body needs the care and attention not only for an athlete but for everyone. But we also have a spiritual being which needs equal nourishment and care. Take for example anger which affects our spiritual being. At first we will rationalize that our anger is due to our hunger or the situation or even the person then we know that we are angry because the spirit of anger is within us. Sometimes we attribute anger to personality, but we understand it is the spirit of anger that makes a person slave to anger. This way every single sin mentioned in the bible is attributable to the slavery.
What are we slaves to? What is the way out of this slavery? Two most important questions bible answers. In Romans 6:20 it says "When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness". And in Romans 6:18 it says "You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness". It is through the word that we come to save our souls (Romans 1:16). It is also through the word that we remain saved (Matthew 4:1-11, II Timothy 3:16). Knowing the word, knowing it in context, using it and applying it properly will keep our spiritual lives healthy and safe from the many temptations of the evil one. Remember we also have a spiritual side and the word is the bread for it.
Father lead us not to temptation but deliver us from evil
Satan tempts us at the point of our physical needs, not that we might gratify them to excess, but that we might think of nothing else, and satisfy them at the expense of our usefulness in this world. - Arthur Leonard Griffith
